Paul E. Skaggs founded Star Fence Company in
Murfreesboro, TN, Rutherford County in 1968. He
began building chain link fences on weekends at
first, and then in 1969 he went full time. He
bought his first fence truck, a 1968 Chevy 6
cylinder short bed. He built a reputation for
honesty and fairness; soon he had enough work to
support the family.
In 1969, he purchased land in Smyrna, TN on Hwy.
41, New Nashville Hwy. Star Fence Company added
a 30 x 50 building to store materials and start
a welding shop for making gates. Star Fence
Company consisted of owner Paul E. Skaggs, son
Mark Skaggs and a host of part time helpers. In
1974, son Mark married Jolene Rivers of Dallas
Texas and began their life together supported by
Star Fence Company.
In the years to follow the economy slowed and so
did Star Fence Company. By the early 1980’s,
Paul E. was looking at retirement. Fencing had
gone down and times were hard. Inflation was at
an all time high, and then came the big news;
Nissan Motor Co. USA was coming to the area. The
phone began to ring, “Mr. Skaggs do you still
put up fence?" "Uh, well, sure we do!" By 1983
we were doing more fence than we ever believed
was possible. Star Fence Company was back to
stay.
In the next 20 years, Mark and Jolene raised 2
sons, Matthew and Joseph and 2 daughters, Bonnie
and Kimberly and Star Fence Company’s future was
looking strong. The Lord had smiled on the
Skaggs family and on Star Fence Company and he
continues to do so with the births of soon to be
five grandchildren - Kylie, Kamryn and Kendall
from oldest son Matthew and wife Darlene, and
grandson Elijah, (named after his great granddad
and founder, Paul E. Skaggs of Star Fence
Company) from son Joseph and wife Sarah.
The past tells you a little about Star Fence
Company and the Skaggs family, but the future is
what we’re really about, our newest addition is
